One hundred and thirty three snake species call Costa Rica home. Costa Rican snakes are placed within 8 families- Neotropical blindsnake family, Slender blindsnake family, True blindsnake family, Neotropical sunbeam snake family, Boa family, Colubrid snake family, Coral snake family and the Viper family. Over half of the 220 plus species of reptile in Costa Rica are snakes. Though much talked about they are rarely seen, but keep an eye out for the fer de lance and the bushmaster, two deadly poisonous snakes (Costa Rica has 17 species of poisonous snakes). Both have broadly triangular heads and are widespread at lower elevations. The fer de lance which can be anything from olive to brown or black in color, has a pattern of X's and triangles on its back, while the bushmaster is usually tan-colored with dark diamond shaped blotches.less
