Manatees in Costa Rica are even harder to see than those in Florida, for the water here is murkier, and the manatees here are both rarer and mostly active at twilight and at night. Although protected, manatees in Costa Rica still face a variety of threats. Illegal fishing nets criss cross lagoons, often within protected areas, are known to have tangled and drowned several manatees over recent years. Ecotourism, while benefiting manatees in a lot of ways, has also brought about more motorboat traffic, a serious threat to the shallow water-loving manatees.

Want to know a little bit more about the spider monkey? Check out this video. Spider monkeys do not survive outside large tracts of primary forest and have been greatly affected by deforestation done in Costa Rica. Since they are good tasting, large, and conspicuous, they have been seriously hunted in many regions of Costa Rica. In some regions they have also been captured for the pet trade. Now, the protection of this species by international law- it is listed as an endangered species which has abated hunting practices. Unfortunately, spider monkeys reproductive turnover is low and they have disappeard from many regions where they used to thrive.
