The leatherback sea turtle is critically endangered (world population of nesting females estimated at 35,000). Leatherbacks nest on the northern Caribbean coast around Parque Nacional Tortuguero and the beaches of Parismina, Costa Rica, from March to June. Pacific leatherbacks have laid eggs on Playa Grande in the Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas de Guanacaste for thousands of years, but the number of nesting turtles has declined dramatically in recent years. Leatherbacks are not killed for meat, but their eggs are considered a delicacy an aphrodisiac no less. Enforement of hunting and harvesting bans requires lots of nighttime beach patrols during turtle nesting season. There are many opportunities for volunteers to assist with beach patrols and education programs.

There are 16 species of parrots in Costa Rica, but none is as magnificent or spectacular as the scarlet macaw. Unmistakable for it's size, bright red body, blue and yellow wings, long red tail and white face. Macaws are frequently seen flying overhead, in pairs or small flocks, calling raucously to one another. Recorded as common in 1900, they have suffered devastating reductions in numbers due to deforestation and poaching for the pet trade. Now it is rare to see these birds outside of Carara and Corcovado.

Toucans are classic rainforest birds and six species are found in lowland forests throughout Costa Rica. Huge bills and flamboyant plumage make species such as the chestnut mandibled toucan and keel billed toucan hard to miss. The chestnut mandibled toucan is mainly black with yellow face and chest and red under the tail, and has a bicolored bill- yellow above and chestnut below. The keel billed toucan is similarly plumaged but the bill is multicolored. With toucans, even the smaller species such as the collared aracari are way cool.

Costa Rica’s most common monkey is the Mantled Howler monkey. Howlers are all dark except for a mantle of light yellowish to reddish fur on the sides and a beard of fur on the chin. Adult howlers will be approximately 20 inches in height and weigh about 11 pounds, with the male a little larger than the female. The males are easily distinguishable by their conspicuous white testicles. Howlers are renowned for their strong vocal cords, which are 25 times larger than that of other similar-sized monkeys. Howlers produce an intimidating, pulsating roar that can last several seconds. These sounds which are usually in response to either neighboring howlers or other similar sounds made by engines, thunder or even the Arenal Volcano. These roars can be heard several kilometers away.

One hundred and thirty three snake species call Costa Rica home. Costa Rican snakes are placed within 8 families- Neotropical blindsnake family, Slender blindsnake family, True blindsnake family, Neotropical sunbeam snake family, Boa family, Colubrid snake family, Coral snake family and the Viper family. Over half of the 220 plus species of reptile in Costa Rica are snakes. Though much talked about they are rarely seen, but keep an eye out for the fer de lance and the bushmaster, two deadly poisonous snakes (Costa Rica has 17 species of poisonous snakes). Both have broadly triangular heads and are widespread at lower elevations. The fer de lance which can be anything from olive to brown or black in color, has a pattern of X's and triangles on its back, while the bushmaster is usually tan-colored with dark diamond shaped blotches.

Costa Rica has many sea-turtle nesting sites. Along both coasts, five species of these huge marine reptiles come ashore at specific times of the year to dig nests in the sand and lay their eggs. Sea turtles are endangered throughout the world due to over-hunting, accidental deaths in fishing nets, development on beaches that once served as nesting areas, and the collection and sale (often illegally) of their eggs. Among the species of sea turtles that nest in Costa Rica's beaches are the olive ridley, leatherback, hawksbill, green, and Pacific green turtle. And don't forget, you can volunteer your time and services to help preserve these incredible animals.
